Does Your Student Need Funds to Attend DISC’ 18?
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the 2018 International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC’18) a grant to partially support the travel needs of students in US-based universities that plan to attend DISC. Graduate or undergraduate student applicants are welcome.
To apply for the travel award, a student in a US-based university needs to submit an application that consists of the following three documents:
- A one-page curriculum vita of the student. It may indicate if the student belongs to an underrepresented group.
- A one-page personal statement which will indicate the student’s research interests and how DISC will likely impact the student. It may indicate if this is their first time attendance to DISC.
- A one-page supporting letter from the student’s advisor, which will indicate that the student is in good standing, and the potential benefits of attending DISC.
The purpose of the NSF grant is to attract students who otherwise would not be able to attend DISC. Therefore, students who are designated to present an accepted paper at DISC’18 are not allowed to apply for these travel awards.
A small panel has been chosen to review and evaluate all applications for these travel awards. The panel composition is as follows:
- Costas Busch, Louisiana State University.
- Gopal Pandurangan, University of Houston.
- Jennifer Welch, Texas A&M.
Women and students from other underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. The selection criteria will be based on merit and also on the special circumstances of the students. Priority will be given to the students of underrepresented groups and also to students that attend for the first time.
Additional Awards
A limited number of student travel awards for full-time graduate students attending DISC who do not qualify for the NSF grants will be offered. These awards will partially cover travel expenses of deserving graduate students who might otherwise be unable to attend
the conference.
The number and amount of awards will be determined based on the available budget and the applications received. For submission follow the same documentation requirements as above.
These documents should be sent to the DISC’18 General Chair (busch@csc.lsu.edu) by October 8th. The subject of the message should be: DISC-travel <applicant name>
